Kawajiri is best known for his strength in the clinch, his takedowns and brutal ground and pound. He has proven to be one of the best in the world at his weight class for the bulk of his career spanning all the way to 2000. He began his career in Shooto where he would fight exclusively for nearly five years eventually winning the belt against Vitor Ribeiro, a fighter he had previously lost to. He reached international stardom in the Pride organization where he went 4-2 before the organization was sold to Zuffa. In 2008 he competed in the DREAM lightweight tournament where he made it to the semifinals before losing to Eddie Alvarez.
