Sherk is one of the most experienced fighters in the UFC despite spending the majority of his career fighting up one weight and in obscurity in small shows, mostly in the Midwest. He uses his relentless takedowns and ground and pound to wear out his opponents into submission. In his first 18 matches Sherk went undefeated including three victories in the UFC and a draw in Pancrase. After losing to Matt Hughes at UFC 42 he would reel off another 12 straight victories including a unanimous decision win in Pride. After returning to the UFC and going a disappointing 1-1 Sherk would drop to 155 pounds and challenge for the newly reintroduced lightweight title which he won against Kenny Florian. He would later be stripped of his title after failing a drug test yet still denies the allegations to this day. He would challenge for the belt again but lost in his attempt to BJ Penn in 2008.
