Fighter of the Year: Quinton “Rampage” Jackson by RJ Clifford
This time last year, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson was a good fighter. He was on a three-fight winning streak capped off by a split decision victory over middleweight Matt Lindland. In his five-year Pride Fighting Championships career, he held wins over some of the world’s very best including Igor Vovchanchyn, Kevin Randleman, Chuck Liddell and Ricardo Arona. The only significant speed bumps impeding his highlight career came at the hands of two Chute Boxe superstars: Wanderlei Silva and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. Silva kept the middleweight title belt and the 2003 Grand Prix belt out of his hands by dispatching the American by brutal knockout in both their fights. In 2005 it was Rua’s turn to shatter any championship dreams when he stopped Jackson via strikes in PrideFC: Total Elimination 2005.
One of the many things I admire about Frank Trigg is his commentaries. Rather than deliver a flat analogy of each fight, he has the ability to mix humor with an easy-to-understand knowledge of the sport. I’d put him right up there with Bas Rutten, a favorite of mine when it comes to calling a fight. For newer female fans still learning the sport, it helps a lot. And that’s what this article is about – the many ways that women view and appreciate the mixed martial arts in contrast to the male perception.
